THE TREATMENT OF TRAUMA AND COMPLEX DISSOCIATIVE DISORDERS
2-day intensive workshop
3 - 4 October 2008
ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP
Led by Dr Ellert Nijenhuis, with an introduction by Margaret Wilkinson, this workshop presents an overview of the theory and psychobiology of structural dissociation and treatment for post-traumatic phobias. Dr Ellert Nijenhuis, an authority on the treatment of trauma and complex dissociative disorders, will methodically introduce the various treatment phases of chronically traumatized individuals.

New trauma theory hypothesizes that traumatization divides the psychobiological system that constitutes an individual's personality. This basic division is between psychobiological action systems that direct us in functions of daily life (for example, attachment, play and exploration) and the reproduction system (survival of the species). In chronic traumatization, Dr Nijenhuis will illustrate, this structural dissociation becomes ever more complex and fixed and requires specific phase-oriented treatment approaches.

This workshop will address
  • The psychology and psychobiology of chronic traumatization and structural dissociation
  • Treatment phases of chronically traumatized individuals
  • Treatment focussed on overcoming specific trauma-related phobias, traumatic memories, and phobias related to insecure attachment to perpetrators
  • Working towards normal life, healthy risk-taking, capacity for change and intimacy
