A ONE DAY SEMINAR LED BY ANDREW SAMUELS
Part I: Psychotherapeutic work with the economic crisis
Part II: Working on issues of fatherhood
Part I: Psychotherapeutic work with the economic crisis
Part II: Working on issues of fatherhood
SATURDAY 24 OCTOBER 2009
ABOUT THIS EVENT
Many therapists and counsellors recognise that they and their clients are personally embedded in complex cultural and political networks. Two contemporary problems are of particular interest: the urgent economic situation and anxiety over the role of the father. The aim of this one-day seminar is to provide an invigorating forum in which participants can consider both issues in the context of their therapy work.
The day will include time for theoretical exploration, case material, and personal reflection on both themes.
PART I: Working with the economic crisis in the therapy
We will explore responsible ways to work directly with material concerning the economy and other political anxieties in therapy. Our object will be to create new techniques based on personal and emotional engagement with these public issues.
PART II: Fathers in Crisis - 'I want my Dad back'
We will hear about innovative developmental psychology that can help clinicians working in areas where the father, men and masculinity are central to the clinical challenge.
SPEAKER'S BIOGRAPHY
Professor Andrew Samuels is recognised internationally as one of the most innovative and influential of those working at the interfaces of therapy and politics. Recently, he has been exploring how economic issues impact on the psyche. He is much sought after as a political consultant in several countries, working with leading politicians, parties and activist groups. Andrew has also done pioneering work in connection with the father and with men generally. Over the past thirty years he has developed a unique blend of post-Jungian, relational psychoanalytic and humanistic approaches to clinical work. He has been a frequent visitor to Ireland, has family origins in the country, and works as Consultant to Immigrant Counselling and Psychotherapy in London - the leading British agency for therapy work with survivors of institutional abuse in Ireland now living in Britain.
He was a co-founder of Psychotherapists and Counsellors for Social Responsibility and the journal Psychotherapy and Politics International. He was elected one of the first six Honorary Fellows of the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy. Andrew is Professor of Analytical Psychology at the University of Essex and holds visiting chairs at New York, London and Roehampton universities. He is a Training Analyst of the Society of Analytical Psychology. His many books have been translated into 19 languages and include The Plural Psyche, The Political Psyche, and Politics on the Couch.
