A Body-Based, Trauma-Centered Approach to Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy

The day will begin with a brief description of an approach that involves viewing the psychotherapeutic process as revolving around traumatic experiences that are embodied in patients and therapists, the following demonstration will be offered:

Participants are asked to feel into their bodies as they stand in a relaxed posture. Then they are asked to notice what happens when they walk around and stand for a moment face to face with another participant. Participants will be asked to share their reactions to the demonstration and to the approach that was discussed.

Early Moment of Meeting
A brief discussion of what happens in the early moments of treatment will be followed by one or two demonstrations of a role-playing scene between patients and therapists

Sameness and Difference in the Aftermath of Trauma
The creation of rigid binaries following trauma will be discussed. Then a demonstration will be offered that pairs participants in order to show willingness or resistance to mirroring bodily postures as traumatic experiences are presented.

Embodied Supervision
The ways in which embodied supervision differs from traditional supervisory experiences will be discussed. And we will offer opportunities for participants to experience embodied supervision on cases of their own choice.
