The Assessment and Treatment of PTSD from an Attachment Perspective
A one-day seminar led by Dr Felicity de Zulueta

Saturday 19 October 2013

FULL PROGRAMME
10.00

What is PTSD?
In this session, Felicity de Zulueta will present Post Traumatic Stress Disorder from an attachment perspective. Examining recent research in epigenetics and the neurobiology of this condition, she will interpret these findings in relation to clients/patients' clinical presentation and their symptoms. She will focus in particular on understanding PTSD in terms of an attunement disorder and what this implies in terms of treatment using other potential therapeutic approaches.
11.15   Coffee
11.45

Assessment and Diagnosis of PTSD
In this session, Felicity de Zulueta will focus on the Assessment and Diagnosis of patients with PTSD with reference to DSM-5 and ICD 11, illustrating this talk with clinical examples and pointers to the most appropriate treatment approach. We will ask: Does my client have PTSD, Complex PTSD, a borderline disorder or a dissociative disorder?
13.00   Lunch
14.00

New therapies for PTSD
This session will outline contemporary therapeutic approaches such as trauma-focused CBT, EMDR and other new therapies that are being used in treating PTSD. We will explore why some patients don't get better and whether this may be due to a more complex, undiagnosed attachment disorder that first needs to be recognised.
15.30   Tea
16.00

Recognising and working with Complex PTSD and Dissociative Disorders
This final presentation will offer an overview of current contemporary approaches to working with complex PTSD and dissociative disorders using a phased approach. Setting the discussion in the context of the significance of early attachment disorder or abuse, clinical examples will be used to suggest ways of overcoming and dealing with such complexities in the adult patient. The audience is invited to share their thoughts, questions and clinical material.
