Shamanic Approaches in Modern Psychotherapy

With Dr Angela Cotter, Christa Mackinnon, Dr Tim Read and Laurie Slade

Saturday 9 April 2016

Shamanism is an ancient spiritual healing practice that has flourished for centuries in all indigenous communities, in which the practitioner endeavours to reach deeper states of consciousness in order to channel spiritually-based, healing influences in the service of another person or people. The shaman, who is traditionally revered as having access to a spiritual realm, may enter into a trance state, evoke ritual or ceremony in order to reach deeper domains of the mind for healing purposes.

Therapy that incorporates shamanism aims to provide techniques that support psychological and emotional development by accessing deeper movements of the mind, using such concepts as soul loss and retrieval, a shamanic tool to work with dissociated parts and ego-states. They may make reference to animal symbols, spirit guides and use the concept of journeying. Importantly, healing is defined as working towards wholeness rather than symptom alleviation. At this conference, three mental health practitioners will offer insights into shamanistic tools and techniques that they have woven into their therapeutic work.
