The late Jeremy Saffran (1952-2018)

The late Dr. Jeremy Safran (1952-2018) received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada in 1982, and completed his psychoanalytic training at the New York University Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy & Psychoanalysis. He was Director of the Cognitive Therapy Unit in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto, from 1986-1990.

Dr. Safran moved to New York City in 1990, to take a position on faculty at The Derner Institute for Advanced Psychological Studies, Adelphi University. In 1993 he moved to the New School for Social Research in NYC to take a position as Director of Clinical Training & Professor of Psychology.

Currently Dr. Safran was Professor of Psychology at the New School for Research, and on faculty at both the New York University Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy & Psychoanalysis, and The Stephen A. Mitchell Center for Relational Studies.

He was also Senior Research Scientist in the Department of Psychiatry, Beth Israel Medical Center, and co-chair (along with Lewis Aron & Adrienne Harris) of the Sandor Ferenczi Center at the New School for Social Research. Dr. Safran published over 150 articles & chapters, and several books including: 1) Emotion in Psychotherapy; 2) Emotion , Psychotherapy and Change; 3) Interpersonal Process in Cognitive Therapy; 4) Negotiating the Therapeutic Alliance; 5) The Therapeutic Alliance in Short Term Psychotherapy; 6) Psychoanalysis & Buddhism: An Unfolding Dialogue, and 7) Psychoanalysis and Psychoanalytic Therapies (APA Publications, 2012), available at Amazon.com and APA . He has released two psychotherapy training DVDs for The American Psychological Association: 1) Relational Psychotherapy, and 2) Psychoanalytic Therapy Over Time.
